CBD: A Tonic for our Times
We’ve all been living this new abnormal for a while now.
It was weird at the start (to be honest, it’s still weird) but we made the most of those early days. We were getting together on Zoom all the time, popping into Houseparty every other minute, and setting up weekly games of Jackbox.
The shine has worn off of those things, but the pandemic’s still kicking around. And the impact on our mental health and wellbeing is not going anywhere either.
For a lot of us, it’s getting worse.
CBD can help
Cannabis contains more than 80 different compounds, dazzling little natural chemicals that we call cannabinoids. But most people don’t know any beyond the big two: THC and CBD.
THC is the most abundant and the most well-known cannabinoid. And while it does have medicinal properties and many health applications, the thing is… THC gets you high.
Enter CBD.
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s generally considered to be the second cannabinoid, behind THC, but it’s been growing in popularity for years. Ask anyone in the know and they’ll agree: CBD has taken over THC as the cannabinoid of choice for the masses.
And the reasons are clear.
CBD and anxiety
The list of CBD’s health applications is extensive. It’s been shown to help with everything from epilepsy to acne reduction.
But in these stressful times, there’s one major reason so many of us are turning to the wonders of CBD: anxiety relief.
The pandemic has affected everyone. We’re trapped in our homes, our finances are taking a hit, and our relationships are strained beyond belief. In short, the present is untenable and the future’s uncertain.
For millions of people, the weight of it all is unbearable.
Good thing that numerous studies have shown that CBD reduces anxiety levels in humans.
In 2011, a study looked at CBD’s effects on people with social anxiety disorder. Participants were split into two groups, the first given an oral dose of 400 mg of CBD, the second a placebo. Those who received CBD experienced overall reduced anxiety levels.
Other more recent studies have shown that CBD can help with PTSD symptoms, such as nightmares and negative memories. The research has looked at CBD as both a standalone treatment and a supplement to traditional treatments like medication and cognitive behavioral therapy.
And for those who suffer through the misery of insomnia, there is hope. A 2019 study concluded that CBD may help with anxiety-related sleep disorders. If your mind is racing and keeping you from the rest you so badly need, CBD could very well be the answer.
CBD is a game changer
When it comes to anxiety, THC has been shown to reduce it at low doses but increase it at higher ones. With CBD, there’s no such issue; CBD can reduce anxiety at any level.
